How to get professional headshots that actually feel like you

When I was in my early 20s, I was advised by someone older and supposedly wiser that I should never reveal anything personal about myself at work - or at least not for the first six months of a job.

I took that advice to heart and kept a firm line between my personal and professional life.

It took me years to realise that letting a bit of my inner world show sometimes wasn’t a liability. It was actually a strength.

Thankfully, the world has changed over the past few decades. These days, there’s a lot more emphasis on authenticity – even vulnerability – and on bringing your whole self to work.

And I think that shift shows up clearly in how people are choosing to present themselves professionally, including online.

More and more, I’m getting briefs from clients who want their professional headshots to look natural and unstuffy – even fun! Fixed smiles and stiff poses are firmly out: natural light and relaxed expressions are in.

This makes me happy for two reasons. First, it makes shoots much more relaxed for everyone. And second, the results are so much more engaging.

Still professional, still confident, but warm, too. Approachable. Human. And in my view, that’s far more important than perfect skin or a properly ironed shirt.

So if your company team page is still full of rictus grins and crossed arms in front of white backdrops, maybe it’s time to show just a little bit more personality?
